Generic Desogestrel Price Decrease

Whilst the branded prescribing of the Consilient range of oral contraceptives in primary care has been preferred in recent years, it is now considerably more cost-effective to prescribe desogestrel generically, based on its current (September 2016) Drug Tariff category M price. NHS costs associated with generic prescribing compared to prescribing the two current preferred formulary brands are detailed in the table below:

PRODUCT

COST TO NHS (packs of 84)

Cerelle®

£3.50

Cerazette®

£9.55

Desogestrel

£1.91

At current prices, the estimated annual saving resulting from prescribing desogestrel 100% generically would be:

RBCCG

£25,549

SWCCG

£34,050

WFCCG

£14,127

These figures are based on prescribing data for all desogestrel presentations from the 12 months to the end of June 2016.

Following the most recent meeting of the Worcestershire Area Prescribing Committee, prescribing this drug generically, rather than by brand is now recommended throughout the Worcestershire health economy. The Worcestershire formulary now reflects this position and the Optimise Rx prescribing support software will recommend prescribers prescribe generically where applicable.

The position regarding the branded prescribing of the Consilient range for other oral contraceptives remains unchanged.

An EMIS search is available at:

Medicines Management Countywide – Top Tip Searches – Patients on Branded Desogestrel

This will highlight patients that receive branded desogestrel presentations on a current repeat prescription.

If you have any suggestions for inclusion in the 'Top Tips' then please send them to Anne.kingham@worcestershire.nhs.uk

A fault on the BNF and BNFC apps has been detected affecting some Apple IOS devices. A small amount of content may be out of date. Please delete the apps and reinstall them from the App store. Android devices and all online web versions of the BNF are unaffected.

It is with regret that we have made the decision to cancel tomorrow evening’s consultation event as only 5 people are able to attend. We still think it is really important to give all practices the opportunity to comment and question our proposal so we’ll be taking the following actions:

  1. The slides we planned to share will be emailed to all practices by the end of today Wednesday 14 September
  2. A survey monkey will be sent to all practices as originally planned w\c 19 September requesting feedback
  3. A FAQ will be produced based on questions we receive from practices
  4. We’ll make time at the forthcoming IQSP visits to talk about the proposal
  5. We’ll separately contact those practices who have already had an IQSP visit

The deadline for making any comments is 7th October. Please contact Lynda Dando or Denise Goddard if you have any concerns or queries.

IQSP

IQSP visits are under way. Please could practices try to find time to review the data which is sent out a fortnight before the visit takes place.

South Worcestershire Locality News:

Promoting Clinical Excellence – Making Quality Referrals

You should have received on Monday baseline referral activity for your practice via an Excel spreadsheet and an explanatory letter in respect of the Making Quality Referrals initiative which forms part of this year’s Promoting Clinical Excellence local contract.

The outpatient attendance data is provided by the Trust. We are aware that there may be issues with some of the data, for example, there may be an attendance linked to a GP who does not work for your practice. The data should though match the discharge summaries that you receive from the trust. We will be happy to take any queries up with the Acute Trust to improve data quality. Please notify any data queries to sowoccg.iprequests@nhs.net

The activity you’ve received is for baseline purposes only.Monitoring under the initiative will start from July 2016 onwards, If you have any queries on this or if you experience difficulty in operating the pivot table please email Caroline.Salmon@worcestershire.nhs.uk or nigel.crew@worcestershire.nhs.uk
