The Network Contract Directed Enhanced Service (DES)

National service specifications 2020/21 engagement

NHSE are seeking feedback on the five national service specifications, of the GP contract framework, which will be delivered by primary care networks (PCNs) - in collaboration with community services and other providers - from April 2020.

The GP contract framework set out seven national service specifications that will be added to the Network Contract DES: five starting from April 2020, and a further two from April 2021. The five services are:

  • Structured Medication Reviews and Optimisation
  • Enhanced Health in Care Homes (jointly with community services providers)
  • Anticipatory Care (jointly with community services providers)
  • Personalised Care; and
  • Supporting Early Cancer Diagnosis

There are a number of opportunities for you to share your thoughts on the outline draft of the service specifications:

  • The document is available on NHSE website, with a number of questions to be answered to help  shape the final service specifications. This will be live from 23 December 2019 until 1pm on 15 January 2020

A series of facilitated interactive webinars will be taking place as follows:

  • Wednesday 8 January 2020 – 12 noon-1.30pm
  • Thursday 9 January 2020 - 10am-11.30am
  • Tuesday 14 January 2020 – 3pm-4.30pm (focusing on the community services elements of the Enhanced Health in Care Homes and Anticipatory Care service specifications, aimed at directors and chief executives of community health providers)

Nikki Kanani will be hosting a Twitter chat on 7 January 2019 specifically about the service specifications. Follow #primarycarenetworks from 8pm and join in the conversation and share your views.

Should you have any questions, please contact england.networkscontract@nhs.net.

Elements of the Anticipatory Care and Enhanced Health in Care Homes specifications will be delivered by providers of community services and we plan to commission these service requirements via the NHS Standard Contract. These requirements form part of the consultation on the Standard Contract, which is running from 19 December 2019 to 31 January 2020.

General Practice Nurse STP Pioneer Opportunity

A joint application to HEE/NHSE from Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCGs and the Primary Care Training Hub for a GPN programme to employ 10 nurses into GPN training posts, to prepare nurses for local employment in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, has been successful. The programme will start March 23rd 2020.

Training will be provided in partnership with Birmingham City University and delivered on a part-academic, part-clinical basis; usually one day at university and four days in a local GP practice.

The GPN Trainees will be either newly qualified nurses in the last 12 months, or nurses from other healthcare settings looking to pursue a career in General Practice. The GPN trainee salary will be fully funded for the 9-month training post as will the academic programme.

During the training period the GPN trainees will increasingly contribute to delivery of services in areas such as cervical cytology, immunisation and vaccination, long term condition reviews, contraception reviews and wound care.

The Training Hub have started the recruitment process - Advert and job description are available

They are also looking for interested GP practices to host a Nurse. More information is included in this letter.

Soon after the New Year, the Training Hub will be contacting practices to advise of the mechanism of formally expressing an interest in hosting a General Practice Nurse Trainee, closing date Jan 20th 2020.

Changes to Umbrella Pathway Referral Process

Sent on behalf of Stephanie Mowbray, Commissioning Officer, Worcestershire County Council

We have previously communicated with GPs regarding the process for referring children and young people to the Umbrella Pathway, which is the multi-disciplinary assessment and diagnosis pathway for autism assessment in Worcestershire.

The process for referring children and young people to the Umbrella/ND pathway is changing and, although GPs do not make many referrals,  I should be grateful if you would arrange for the briefing to be forwarded to all GPs to make them aware of the changes.

If you need any further information, please get in touch.

Many thanks
