Channel Panel Vacancy

The Prevent Strategy Group is seeking an interested General Practitioner to become a member of the Channel panel.

The aim of the Prevent strategy is to reduce the threat to the UK from terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

Channel forms a key part of the Prevent strategy. The process is a multi-agency approach to identify and provide support to individuals who are at risk of being drawn into terrorism.

Prescribing Top Tip

Prescribing of Calcium & Ergocalciferol Tablets

Calcium & Ergocalciferol tablets have historically been used to treat simple deficiency of vitamin D, however this product is non-formulary and represents poor value when compared to our preferred calcium & vitamin D preparations such as Calci-D® or Adcal D3. ®

The NHS list prices of Calcium & Ergocalciferol tablets relative to comparator products as of May 18 are given in the table below:

Product

NHS Price (DT/MIMS May 18)

A UKMI document, hosted on the Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) website, located here states that colecalciferol (vitamin D2) is the treatment of choice in vitamin D deficiency.  All preferred vitamin D Worcestershire formulary lines contain colecalciferol rather than ergocalciferol (vitamin D3).

Note however that supplements containing colecalciferol are obtained from animal sources (usually as a by-product of wool fat) and are not suitable for strict vegetarians.

Practices are advised to review patients receiving courses of Calcium & Ergocalciferol. If continued prescribing is appropriate then a more cost-effective brand should be used.

Based on 12 month’s prescribing to the end of March 18, a 100% switch to Calci-D would generate savings throughout Worcestershire of £17,737 as detailed in the table below:
