PCN Development Worcestershire - Update

The PCN Development Programme is now in full swing across Worcestershire with 10 of the 11 PCNS taking part.

The focus of these sessions is to provide protected time (funded) for practices to come together within their PCNs to create and discuss their vision for the future, think about communication and engagement within the PCN and delivery.

These sessions will strongly influence the content of the PCN Development Programme moving forward. As mentioned in previous MPU editions, we now produce a PCN weekly update and FAQs on Teamnet and this can be found under the ‘Herefordshire and Worcestershire STP’ portal page.

The following video was shared at the PCN Set Up days, ‘Peter Fuda – Ambition’ it is definitely worth watching.

Here’s some photographs from both sessions

September 2019 Workforce Survey Summary - Update

Thank you to all 83 practices across Herefordshire and Worcestershire for completing the September Quarterly Workforce Survey. The survey continues to support the work of the Primary Care Workforce Team and we continue to work with practices who request our support.

Key Headlines

There is an increase of 10 GP Headcount across the STP since the previous survey, however we are aware of some practices reporting difficulties with recruitment. Some practices have attended RCGP recruitment evenings and have successfully recruited as a result of this networking.

We have two upcoming engagement events for mid-career GPs and General Practice Nurses in December. We would encourage and welcome attendance as this is your opportunity to help us with our plans to retain more staff in general practice and support with recruitment.
Since the last report the following local and national programmes have been put in place or are in the process of being implemented to support our GP workforce, details of these programmes and more can be found in the report:

  • Next Generation GP programme
  • First 5 GP mini-event series
  • GP mentoring
  • Portfolio roles with the hospitals for Breast, Frailty and Elderly Care

The local programmes of work have been developed based on feedback received from our GPs at various events and interactions across the STP. This information has been fed into the Workforce Implementation Group. The team made up of GPs, members of NHSE, the CCGs, the Training Hub and HEE work through the feedback provided to develop and implement the programmes which are deemed to be most likely to have a positive impact on the workforce.

The following programmes are currently with the team for future consideration:

  • PCN portfolio grant scheme
  • Phoenix programme for mid-career GPs
  • Pre-retirement forums for GPs considering retirement
  • Local Welcome back to Work scheme to support GPs returning to work after a period of absence
  • GP Academy – developing a medical education academy and providing training for GPs to support teaching, supervision and mentoring
  • New to Practice programme for new GPs and Practice Nurses

IQSP and ICT Study Day – 28 November

Thank you to everyone who attended the day, it was a great success and we were thrilled that so many colleagues from Herefordshire joined us in the morning. We’re currently collating and synching the presentation slides with their narrative, the ICT videos and your feedback, all of which will be posted onto TeamNet – we’ll let you now when it’s all available. Once again many thanks.

Flu Update

Delay in supply of Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (Fluenz Tetra)

Thank you for your continued support on the delivery of the annual flu programme especially given the issues with the vaccine supply for children and those under 65. Public Health England published clinical prioritisation for children in high risk groups, as a result of the delay in delivery of some batches of childhood Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV Fluenz Tetra) nasal spray issued on 21 October 2019, which can be found via this link PHE briefing note 2019/051.

NHS England and NHS Improvement can confirm that practices who have followed the advice given by PHE that where LAIV is not available and they have vaccinated those children who are at risk with QIV and coded the vaccination appropriately will receive payment. The current Business Rules will support payment to practices whether the child has been given LAIV or QIV.

Practices are advised to use the centrally supplied stock of QIV and should follow the PHE guidance on responsible ordering of central supply of QIV which will help support the direction of stock to those with greatest immediate need as it becomes available. Where practices are obliged to use their own stock as no centrally procured stock is available, and to avoid delaying vaccine administration, this will be reimbursed in the usual way.

Practices are asked to continue to call and recall children and to only order vaccine in line with the latest guidance from PHE on ImmForm even if this is below the maximum quota to avoid stockpiling. Close adherence to the vaccine storage requirements in the cold chain is essential to avoid vaccine wastage.

Thank you for your help and support with this.

Study: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice of GPs and practice nurses in the West Midlands Regarding Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C West Midlands)

As a reminder we are inviting GPs and practice nurses in the West Midlands to take part in the FGM/C West Midlands study, run by the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences, Keele University in collaboration with West Midlands Clinical Research Network. If you have already responded or have decided not to take part in the study, please ignore this reminder and we apologise for troubling you again.

In brief, being part of this study will involve completing a very short online survey related to your knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding FGM/C.

You can access the survey and participant information sheet, explaining the study in more detail and how you can take part.

The survey will take no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Thank you for considering taking part in the FGM/C West Midlands study.

NHS Community Pharmacy Clinical Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS)

This new national service launched on 29th October 2019 as an Advanced Service. The service replaces the NUMSAS and DMIRS pilots and makes referrals from NHS 111 to community pharmacy for patients with a minor illness or need an urgent supply of a medicine.

The CPCS aims to relieve pressure on the wider NHS by connecting patients with community pharmacy, for advice where pharmacy can be the first port of call. It is estimated up to 6% of all GP consultations (20.4m appointments a year) could be safely transferred to a community pharmacist [data from GPFV]. There are plans for referrals to be taken from other parts of the NHS in time.

Both elements of the service provide an electronic post event message securely to GP practice systems. The service across Herefordshire and Worcestershire is bedding in with over 80 NHS community pharmacies signed up to start to provide the service. Further information will follow.

Primrose Hospice - Board Member Vacancy

Primrose Hospice are seeking a local GP to join our board of Trustees at an exciting time for this ambitious charity.

As a board member you will have the opportunity to influence and develop our future strategic direction and hospice services for the benefit of the community of Redditch and Bromsgrove. We would also value additional senior clinical leadership for the Clinical Governance Group.

The appointment is on a voluntary basis and is not remunerated other than reasonable expenses, Board meetings are 4 times per year and clinical Governance meetings are also 4 times per year (all meetings are currently early evening).

Any appointment would need to be ratified by the board but we are trying to identify individuals who could support us.

If you are interested, please contact David Burrell, Chief Executive for an informal discussion (mob 07519 635311).
